Job Title: Protection Officer

Job Summary
The Protection Officer will support and apply protection measures according to Humanitarian Principles, SPHERE Standards, and other relevant guidelines.
This role involves managing complaints and feedback mechanisms. The Officer should have strong communication skills, be able to multitask under pressure, work well in a team, and solve problems effectively.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with partners and donors to assess protection risks and gender issues.
- Conduct safety audits at operation sites and distribution points.
- Monitor and report changes in the protection environment.
- Identify and document barriers faced by vulnerable groups (e.g., child-headed households, people with disabilities, separated minors) and make adjustments to include them in assistance programs.
- Map and communicate referral pathways for protection issues, including gender-based violence and child protection.
- Ensure safe and confidential referrals for protection cases.
- Translate protection guidelines into practical actions, such as training and mentoring food security staff.
- Lead activities related to protection and gender in social behavioral change communication.
- Conduct training and raise awareness for food security teams on protection and gender issues.
- Support good practices in data protection and privacy.
- Raise awareness about preventing sexual exploitation and abuse among food security teams and affected communities.
- Design and implement information provision, community consultation, and feedback mechanisms.
- Establish and consult with Project Management Committees.
- Prevent incidents of sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment by ensuring appropriate safety measures.
- Strengthen mechanisms to handle and refer SEA incidents.
- Facilitate investigations and accountability in a safe, survivor-centered manner.
- Engage with local communities to ensure they are treated as rights-holders and provide updates on PSEA issues.
- Establish a whistle-blower mechanism to protect and support staff reporting sexual exploitation and abuse.
- Regularly inform staff and beneficiaries on how to report and address protection issues.
- Distribute information on PSEA, beneficiary rights, and reporting avenues.
- Assess and improve existing Complaints and Feedback Mechanisms (CFMs) for SEA friendliness.
- Provide mentorship and build capacity for staff.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field with at least 3 years of experience in emergency programming, preferably in Northeast/Northwest Nigeria.
- Experience managing staff and programs in insecure locations.
- Strong interpersonal, intercultural, and communication skills.
- Excellent analytical, data management, coordination, and organizational skills.
- Fluency in English, Kanuri, and Hausa.
- Additional qualities: ability to multi-task, handle pressure, improvise, and adapt to transitions.
